What is the IICRC?

The Intermountain Injury Control Research Center (IICRC) is a research facility at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah dedicated to reducing the incidence and severity of injury in public health. This is done primarily through data analysis and research as well as public information and community injury prevention programs.

How did the IICRC get started?
The IICRC was created in 1992 with the awarding of the Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) Cooperative Agreement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Bureau. Since then, funding has been received from several other federal agencies including the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (now known as AHRQ), National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, as well as state and private sources for injury prevention-related projects and research.

What kind of expertise does the IICRC have?
The IICRC supports more than 50 faculty and staff members who have expertise in statistics, probabilistic linkage, evaluation, injury control, trauma systems, EMS data, community action, public information, policy, information technology, epidemiology, research, and education. Such expertise allows for a comprehensive analysis of the complex injury problems, high-risk populations, strategies for preventative intervention, and methods for improving the outcome of injury.

What kinds of projects is the IICRC involved with?
Some of the current projects at the IICRC include a violent injury surveillance system, a data analysis resource center, a data coordinating center for pediatric research, evaluation of a shaken baby prevention program, development of an integrated statewide motor vehicle traffic data systems, linkage of traffic crash records to hospital and other medical records, and more. Research is a major focus of the IICRC, and the staff are published frequently in the public health and medical literature.
